Help builds for Faith, Max & Nicole

DETROIT – Three women who graduated from Lake Orion High School together in 1989 have more than their friendship in common: Each one is a mother to a child facing a life-threatening illness.

Shelly Burton, Nicole Schwein and Susan Aisthorpe have band together to be each other's support.

Burton's 7-year-old daughter, Nicole, is battling her second round of Leukemia, but doesn't let it dampen her spirits.

"Her personality makes it worth fighting," Burton, said.

Nicole has become the inspiration to Max, a 2-year-old who already faces Down Syndrome and was recently diagnosed with the Leukemia.

His mother, Schwein, said Burton and her daughter's support have given the family strength.

Aisthorpe's 6-year-old daughter, Faith, was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was 18 months old.

The Lake Orion community has pledged to raise $100,000 with one alumni planning to ride his bike more than 1,300 miles from Denver to Detroit in an effort to gather donations per mile.
