Wayne County commissioner questions how video got released

Video shows traffic stop involving Kevin McNamara

DETROIT – A nine-month old video of a traffic stop involving a Wayne County Commissioner has surfaced. But its release is being questioned as to if someone is just trying to spread embarrassment.

Canton police stopped Wayne County Commissioner Kevin McNamara on April 1, 2011. Video shows him being given several sobriety tests.

Local 4 requested the video from police and was told it would take days to get. McNamara provided the video to Local 4 during his interview.

McNamara said he was told by the officer he blew a 0.07 during his Breathalyzer, which is just below Michigan's 0.08 legal limit.

He said the incident is embarrassing but stresses that he broke no laws and was given a ride home.

"My Catholic upbringing says you pay penance when you do something wrong. This is my penance," he said.

McNamara said he's been told County Executive Robert Ficano's administration is investigating into how copies of the tape, which were made on county computers in the Guardian Building, got out.

"I want an explanation. Maybe they should get some time off. I don't want a person's life destroyed because of a five-minute mistake," McNamara said.

He isn't pointing fingers at one person specifically, but said he feels like someone is out to get him.

"I've been a frequent critic of Bob Ficano's. Last week and the week before I was especially critical of many of the moves he has done that has recently been uncovered," he said.
