Homes, businesses heavily damaged over 5 blocks in Mt. Morris Township

Nobody injured despite significant damage

MT. MORRIS TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The tornado that hit Mt Morris and Genesee Townships was strong enough to twist power poles out of their foundations.

Businesses and homes along Saginaw Road took the brunt of the damage from the twister.

People in the surrounding neighborhoods said they could hear the wind and they quickly took cover.

"It was coming that way, I said everybody hit the basement," said Angela Lab. Her family also took cover in their homes including her cousin who has a baby.

"She had her baby and herself in the tub," said Lab.

Business owners are also assessing the damage done. In many cases roofs were blown off, and windows blown out, but luckily nobody was injured.

For Bertram Lawrence it was a close call in Mt. Morris Township. He found his brother after the storm, and Lawrence told Local 4 that if the tornado had come any earlier, he and his brother would have taken a direct hit.

"Usually I'm here. I'm here working all the time," said Lawerence. "Thank you Jesus."

As cleanup is underway, police have gone door to door in the neighborhoods hardest hit to make sure everyone is okay.

Consumers Energy has also gone to homes checking for gas leaks. The utility company said 15 meters were pulled off of houses, but those houses were vacant and already capped. So far there have been no reports of gas leaks.
