DETROIT – Miles Sholar, who will be a junior at Denby High this year, has never left the city of Detroit.
Now he is preparing for the trip of a lifetime starting Saturday.

Miles and five other classmates at the Education Achievement Authority's Denby High School are headed to England for a cultural learning experience supported by the non-profit organization Atlantic Impact.
"I can't believe I am going to another part of the world to actually see what I have read in books," Sholar said. "I am excited to learn about another culture and talk to our pen pals about issues they face and how they deal with those issues."
Throughout the last school year, the students exchanged cultural experiences with other students of African descent who live across the Atlantic in Britain's oldest black community, Liverpool. Although they have different cultural experiences, the students shared common goals to better themselves and their neighborhoods.
The Education Achievement Authority of Michigan worked with Atlantic Impact to give students an innovative learning experience.
The students take monthly field trips to historically relevant sites in Detroit and learn the relevance of the events to modern day life.
"We are committed to give our students high-quality learning experiences, and our partnership with Atlantic Impact provides opportunities for them to see the world from another perspective and bring those ideas back to their communities," said Interim Principal Tracie McKissic.
The students also have been invited to the United States Embassy in London during the trip.
The students, who return to Detroit on August 3, will be sharing photos from their journey with Local 4.
