ST. IGNACE, Mich. – Thousands of people have followed a fast-paced Michigan governor in the annual Labor Day walk across the Mackinac Bridge.
The 56th bridge walk began at 7 a.m. Monday, with Gov. Rick Snyder at the front. He says he was happy to break his previous best time and finish the 5-mile crossing in 57 minutes.
Walkers were allowed to start until 11 a.m., beginning on the north side in St. Ignace and heading south across the span to Mackinaw City.
There's no charge to take part, but it costs $5 for a bus ride to either side of the bridge for pickup.
Baby strollers and wheelchairs are allowed, but bicycles and other wheeled vehicles aren't. Running also is prohibited except for those pre-registered for the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness jog.
