DETROIT – A Detroit police officer convicted of sexually assaulting teen girls was sentenced Monday to prison.
Geoffrey Townsend once wore a badge but now he's in an orange jail uniform.
He was found guilty of six criminal sexual conduct charges involving at least two underage girls. He will spend the next 10 to 15 years in prison.
Townsend met the victims at a boot camp program he founded for troubled teens -- Reality Check Detroit.
Townsend's involvement with the organization was outside his employment as a police officer.
The camp is a nonprofit crime prevention program for youths between the age of 6 and 14. Two girls testified that Townsend had sex with them in his Farmington Hills home.
The crimes happened between October 2010 and August 2012.
The mother of another victim says her family trusted Townsend because he was a police officer.
"My daughter has thoughts of being angry, hurt, depressed sleepless nights, many nightmares, violated, shamed, even her self-esteem is low," said the mother in on the stand.
The prosecutor says Townsend had sex more than fifty times with one of the girls and he victimized at least three others.
"I just ask that the court would be generous with the sentencing time. I have my family here, my mom is here," said Townsend during the sentencing.
Townsend two daughters were in court too. Judge Martha Anderson exceeded the sentencing guidelines.
"They were abused when they came to you and instead of healing their bruises you made them worse," said Anderson.
She said Townsend was sworn to uphold the law and committed acts not charged in this case.
