NORFOLK, Va. – An anonymous Craigslist post asking that African-American not enter a particular neighborhood to trick-or-treat has a town buzzing.
Posted in the Larchmont-Edgewater "Rants and Raves" section of Craigslist, the home owner reminds young people that it is illegal for kids older than 12 to trick-or-treat (it is a misdemeanor offense in Norfolk, Va., where the neighborhood is located) and also adds that all black trick-or-treaters are not welcome, regardless of age. WTKR reports that the original post, which was offensive on many levels, warns, "We're a white neighborhood and we don't want you baboons here!!"
Several Larchmont-Edgewater residents have expressed outrage at the Craigslist post. "When I see that, I don`t know where it comes from, where all the anger comes from. Why are we using these words?" said one WTKR reader.
Norfolk Police said that every child 12 and under, who trick or treats before 8 p.m., can go wherever in the city they choose.
