Metro Detroit malls focus on security as holiday season nears

Oakland County Sheriff says everyone should at least prepare for active shooter situation

NOVI, Mich. – As the holiday shopping season begins, malls across Metro Detroit are increasing their focus on security.

"We are constantly reviewing our security plan. Security is a year round job," said Dan Jones, general manager at Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard leads a countywide program of tactical training for first responders. But says that's only half of the job.

"Every person needs to prepare and have a plan. What would you do before law enforcement arrives?" said Bouchard.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Department has put out a training manual for civilians called the Active Shooter Response Guide.

"In a threatening situation we all fall back on training and practice," said Bouchard, "Run, hide, and as a last resort fight."

He says chances are very very small that any of us will ever be in an active shooter situation.

"It's not about being afraid. It's about being prepared," he said.
