ROCHESTER, Mich. – For the fourth year in a row, the team from St. John Lutheran School in Rochester has been named the winner of the 2014 Michigan Regional Future City Competition. The team will now prepare to compete in the national Future City event in Washington, DC in February.
Coming in second place is St. Valentine School in Redford; third place is MacArthur K-8 University Academy in Southfield; Fourth Place is the Jain Society of Greater Detroit in Farmington Hills; fifth place is Athanasius Kircher Academy in Belleville, a homeschool.

In addition to winning first place, the team from St. John Lutheran also received several special awards, including the Best Award for Architectural Engineering of an Integrated High Performing City, sponsored by Lawrence Technological University; the Quality Improvement Award, sponsored by the American Society for Quality, Greater Detroit Section 1000; the Best Communities by Design Award, sponsored by American Institute of Architects, Michigan; the Most Use of Alternative or Renewable Fuels Award, sponsored by Dürr Systems Inc.; and the People's Choice Award, sponsored by Ford Motor Company Fund.
St. Valentine School in Redford received the Best Quality of Life Award, sponsored by the ESD Institute, as well as the Safest City Award, sponsored by Hartland Insurance Group, Inc. MacArthur.
K-8 Academy in Southfield received the Best Essay Award, sponsored by Crain's Detroit Business Best; the Best Futuristic Transportation Award, sponsored by DENSO International America, Inc., and the Building with the American Spirit: People, Projects, Communities Award, sponsored by Barton Malow Company.
The fourth place winner, Jain Society of Greater Detroit in Farmington Hills also received the following Special Award: Best Design, Engineering & Construction Sponsored by Walbridge and The William Barclay Parsons Excellence Award, sponsored by Parsons Brinckerhoff Michigan, Inc.
The fifth place winner, Athanasius Kircher Academy in Belleville received the following Special Award: Best Rookie Team Award, sponsored by the University of Michigan College of Engineering.
Future City is a STEM-based competition that challenges 6th, 7th and 8th grades students to envision a city 150-plus years into the future in which they would like to live. This year's theme focused on "Tomorrow's Transit: Design A Way To Move People In And Around Your City."
