Sterling Heights police: Beware of men posing as federal agents

Police say there's been 2 recent incidents; one of which included a robbery

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – Sterling Heights police are investigating two separate incidents where men have posed as federal law enforcement agents.

The first incident happened April 28 at a home in the 3000 block of Cherry Creek Lane. Police said two men, who identified themselves as Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents, and who said they had a search warrant, were let in by the homeowner. Once inside, police said, the men stole cash, a gun and cellphones.

Police said the men's shirts had "ATF" on them, but the men didn't produce any ID badges or documentation.

A woman, who didn't enter the home, was with the men during the robbery, police said.

They left in a white, late model SUV -- possibly a Suburban or a Yukon.
Descriptions from police:

  • White male, possibly of Middle Eastern descent, 5 feet 8 inches tall, 150 pounds, unshaven. He was wearing a black baseball cap with a black T-shirt that had "ATF" written on the front in white, and black jeans.
  • White male, 6 feet tall, short brown hair, unshaven, large build. He was wearing a black baseball cap with "ATF" on it, black zip top with a white-lettered logo, jeans. He also had a handgun in a holster.

The second incident happened Tuesday in the 3700 block of Hacker.

Police said three men identified themselves as FBI agents and were let into the home. They were all wearing black knit hats, T-shirts that read "FBI," black gloves and unknown badges. Two of the men had long guns, police said.

The man told the homeowner they were looking for a relative, but when the homeowner told one of the men he looked familiar, all three men fled, police said.
They left in a black SUV, possibly a Cadillac Escalade with tinted windows.

Descriptions from police:

  • Two white males, possibly of Middle Eastern descent, 6 feet tall, 225 pounds. One had red hair with a black beard and the other one had black hair.
  • A white male, possibly of Middle Eastern descent, medium height and build.

Police noted that while there are similarities to the two incidents, it's not conclusive whether they are related.
