Fire forces evacuation at senior living complex in Westland

Several fire departments assisted

WESTLAND, Mich. – Residents of a senior living complex in Westland are returning to their homes after a fire broke out early morning Thursday.

Several departments from the surrounding areas were called to the Villages of Westland on Cherry Hill.

The fire broke shortly before 2 a.m. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire before 4:30 a.m.

Local 4 was told 20 units inside the complex had to be evacuated. Between 50 and 60 people were moved into another section of the living center.

Police say they had to break windows to get some residents out of their homes. Others had to be taken out on stretchers. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Investigators say the fire started from a heating wall unit in one of the apartments.
