Former substitute teacher faces child porn charges in Monroe

52-year-old man has not been in classroom since 2003

David William Huntley

MONROE, Mich. – A local substitute teacher is charged with five counts of possession of sexually abusive material of children after police say child pornography was found in his home.

David William Huntley, 52, was arraigned Friday afternoon in Monroe. His bond was set at $1 million cash. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for March 26. The prosecutor said he is seeking more serious charges.

Huntley was a substitute teacher in several Monroe County school districts from 2000-2003 (see list of schools below). He was removed from the substitute management system in August 2003 after being fired for not keeping control in his classroom. That prevented him from substituting again in all Monroe County public schools, according to a spokesman from the Monroe County Intermediate School District (MCISD). He has never been employed or substituted at the MCISD.

Huntley was most recently working at a fast food restaurant.

Police say that during an interview the man admitted to having sexual contact with numerous children spanning over decades, including opportunistic assaults on complete strangers in public places.

Local 4 spoke with Huntley outside court on Friday. He said he tried not to touch Monroe-area kids in a sexual manner.

"I have tried not to be abuse any (kids)," he said. "I may have scared them."

Police took multiple computers from the man and searched through them Friday morning. Police say they found a substantial amount of child pornography in the man's home.

His primary home, in the 7800 block of Bonner Street, and secondary residence, in the 8000 block of Dunbar Street, both in Monroe, were searched by police.

Police say they don't believe the man has harmed any children in the classroom. Instead, they suspect he may have assaulted children in public places.

He is being held in the Monroe County Jail.

Investigators are asking for help from the public to determine if anyone has information about the alleged assaults and criminal acts.
