DPD officer shot in foot, man shot in chin on Detroit's east side

DETROIT – A Detroit police officer was shot in his foot and an 18-year-old man was shot in his chin on Detroit's east side according to Detroit Police Chief James Craig.

The shooting happened at the corner of Chalmers Avenue and Rosemary Street, but the circumstances are still unclear.

The officer responded to calls of shots fired in the area and collided with a silver Buick Verano, according to Craig.

The car was driven by Keith Davis, 18, with his 15-year-old cousin as a passenger. Davis rented the car to go to Southeastern High School's prom last night according to the family.

Craig said that the officer got out of the vehicle and began taking fire. The officer returned fire.

"What we do believe right now is that the officer was faced with a threat and he responded by using deadly force," Craig said. "There may have been a suspect standing outside on the sidewalk with a weapon and fired shots at police officers after the collision."

The officer was shot in the foot and Craig said that it may have been self-inflicted.

Davis' chin was grazed by a bullet, as well as his chest.

The boys were questioned about the shooting, but Detroit police did reiterate that the teens were never considered suspects. The 15-year-old was released from custody and the 18-year-old has been released from the hospital.

Both the officer and Davis did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

Police are continuing their search for a possible gunman in the area.
