Local doughnut shop destroyed in fire

Cause of fire is under investigation

MELVINDALE, Mich. – A local doughnut shop, Yum Yum Tasty Doughnuts in Melvindale, was destroyed in a fire Saturday after the owners closed it for the night at around 5 p.m.

Fire crews from Melvindale, Dearborn and Detroit attacked the fire at the shop, but it destroyed what owner Jeff Greenwald and his wife built.

The shop has been trying to compete with the big chains and became a big part of the community by volunteering baked goods for all kinds of local events. The building was a morning meeting place for regulars.

"We're sorry that we can't be there for you," Greenwald said to his customers. "It's really tough to not wait on the people we've waited on for the last seven and a half years. And we do have great regulars that come in."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Greenwald says investigators told him it could be awhile until they find out exactly how it started.
