FCA receives strike notification from UAW

Contract extension will end at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday

DETROIT – FCA confirmed Tuesday it has received strike notification from the United Auto Workers union.

"The company continues to work with the UAW in a constructive manner to reach a new agreement," FCA said in a statement.

The union has been attempting to negotiate a new contract with FCA. The UAW negotiators and FCA reached an agreement in September, but rank-and-file autoworkers overwhelmingly rejected that deal. An extension agreement was reached on Sept. 30.

A union leader said in a letter Tuesday to FCA the contract extension will end at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, which is when a potential strike could happen.

"In accordance with the parties' September 30, 2015 Extension Agreement, this letter shall serve as formal notice provided by the International Union, UAW and its respective Local Unions, which are signatories to one or more National and Local Collective Bargaining Agreements with FCA US LLC, of the Union's termination of the aforementioned agreements, to be effective at 11 :59 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2015," reads the letter from Norwood Jewell, vice president and director at UAW Chrysler.

The union represents 40,000 workers at FCA.
