Michigan gas prices drop 5 cents

DEARBORN, Mich. – Good news for drivers as they start their week. AAA Michigan says gas prices statewide have decreased by 5 cents in the past week.

The Dearborn-based auto club says the statewide average price for self-serve regular unleaded gasoline was about $1.96 on Sunday, which is about 49 cents less than it was this time last year.

The lowest average price was about $1.91 per gallon in the Lansing area, while the highest was around $2.05 per gallon in the Marquette area.

According to Triple-A, the decrease in price can be attributed to refineries going through seasonal maintenance and due to refineries starting to switch to producing summer-blend gasoline.

Even though gas prices dropped this week, the auto club says gas prices normally hit peak levels in the spring, before the busy summer travel season.
