Former Detroit mayor Dennis Archer defends city in debate with Trump supporter

DETROIT – Former Detroit mayor Dennis Archer appeared on CNN's "New Day" Friday morning, ahead of Donald Trump's appearance in Detroit this weekend.

Archer participated in a somewhat heated debate with Darrell Scott, pastor of New Spirit Revival Center in Cleveland, who also promoted Trump's black outreach.

“Detroit is in bad shape,” Scott said. “It’s in bad shape economically, it’s in bad shape as far as crime is concerned, and so you have a candidate that’s saying, ‘I want to improve the conditions of the city economically, I want to improve the condition of the city as far as crime is concerned’ — you can’t turn a deaf ear to that, whoever it is.”

Archer, who served as Detroit mayor from 1994 to 2002, said he agreed that voters should pay closer attention to reform promises, but disagreed with Scott's characterization of the city.

"He has not been here at all," Archer said about Scott. "Since we've been out of bankruptcy, the city of Detroit has been booming."
