Relatives mourn teen killed in Detroit after family's argument with speeding driver

Jada Rankin shot, killed on Detroit's west side

DETROIT – A standout high school student was fatally shot in Detroit this past weekend when her brother got into an argument with a driver, who had been speeding down the street, opened fire with a gun.

The 15-year-old's family is talking about the loss of their beloved daughter, Jada Rankin.

Piper Jenkins said her goddaughter was shot and killed at her brother's birthday party early Sunday morning while the family was standing outside a home near Schaefer and Schoolcraft roads in West Detroit.

A driver went speeding by and almost hit one of Jada's cousins, so her brother confronted the driver, who pulled out a gun and started shooting.

Jada was shot once in the stomach. Her brother rushed her to the hospital, but she died of her injury.

A few family members tried to follow the driver, but were unsuccessful.
