Plymouth clerk denies making anti-Muslim comments on Facebook

Linda Langmesser faces pressure to resign after alleged comments

PLYMOUTH, Mich. – The longtime Plymouth clerk is facing pressure to resign over alleged anti-Muslim comments posted on Facebook.

Linda Langmesser said she didn't write the alleged comments. Langmesser has worked in the Plymouth clerk's office for about 30 years and has served as the city clerk for the last 20 years.

The city manager said the comments don't sound like something Langmesser would say.

On a Facebook post linking to a story about a Muslim woman claiming she only lasted eight days in the White House, there was a comment that said, "Of course they don't tell the whole truth, part of their culture. She is nothing but trouble and needs to be sent back so she can profess her love to the Koran there where it is appreciated, not here!"

The name on the comment is Linda Langmesser.

"I was shocked," city manager Paul Sincock said.

Sincock said he immediately opened an internal investigation after learning about the incident.

"It's not who we are," Sincock said.

Langmesser said on the phone that she didn't write the comment. She said she respects other people's religions and wouldn't jeopardize her job. She said it is her Facebook page, but doesn't know how it would've happened.

If she did write the comment, a Plymouth resident thinks she should at least be reprimanded.

"You can't run around saying that," the resident said.

Langmesser is an appointed clerk, so she can be fired. Sincock said appropriate action will be taken after the investigation.
