DETROIT – A newborn baby girl was found in a trash bin Sunday night after a woman went to the hospital complaining of bleeding and stomach pain.
Police said they received a call that a woman had been taken to the intensive care unit at a hospital complaining of cramps and bleeding. The medical staff realized she'd recently given birth, but there was no baby with her or her husband.
Scouts went to a home in the 3500 block of Yorkshire Road on Detroit's east side and found remains of a newborn baby.
"There were cops all up and down the block, about six, and officers up on the porch," neighbor Tom Burnett said.
Officers went behind the home at 11:23 p.m. Sunday and found a newborn baby girl dead in a trash bin.
Police said the 39-year-old mother of the baby was taken to the hospital by the baby's father. The man, 40, said as of Sunday night he didn't know his wife gave birth to the child.
"There was a woman with her hands cuffed behind her back and she was led out of the house and then back," Burnett said.
But police said right now nobody is in custody.
"That's, like, really devastating," neighbor Amber Croft said. "I think you could've gave the baby away or adopted it. There just seems like there could've been a better solution to the problem."
Detroit police homicide detectives are investigating the case.
