President Donald Trump fires FBI Director James Comey

Trump says Comey's firing 'will mark a new beginning' for FBI

President Donald Trump has fired FBI Director James Comey, the White House announced Tuesday.

In a statement, Trump says Comey's firing "will mark a new beginning" for the FBI. The White House said the search for a new FBI director will begin immediately.

Comey's firing comes days after he testified on Capitol Hill about the FBI's investigation into Russia's election meddling and possible connections between Russia and Trump's campaign.

United States Senator Debbie Stabenow released the following statement on Comey's firing:

"I am deeply disturbed by the breaking news of FBI Director Comey's dismissal. With an ongoing investigation into possible collusion between the Russian government and Trump campaign officials, the decision is a potential threat to our national security.

It is essential that we finally appoint an independent special prosecutor to get to the bottom of this. The integrity of our election process and our national security is too important to play political games
