Woman sentenced to 27-50 years in prison for crash that killed FedEx truck driver

Rodrick Motley, 48, killed in crash

DETROIT – A 26-year-old Grosse Pointe Woods woman was handed a lengthy prison sentence Friday for the crash that killed a FedEx truck driver on Detroit's east side.

Police said Myah Marea Batts was driving at a high speed Feb. 7 on Newport Street when she blew through a stop sign at Chandler Park Drive. Her car hit a FedEx truck and forced it onto a grassy median.

Batts was driving under while under the influence of alcohol at the time of the horrific crash.

Judge Mark Slavens sentenced her to a minimum of 27 years and maximum of 50 years in prison.

The FedEx driver, Rodrick Motley, 46, was ejected from the truck. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Batts with second-degree murder, operating while intoxicated causing death, driving with a suspended license causing death and reckless driving causing death.

"The judge did say that if she gets out she should be tested for alcohol, but she shouldn’t get out,” Motley’s cousin, Nina Forney, said. “She shouldn’t get out."

Several of Motley's family members spoke at the sentencing Friday. They offered forgiveness to Motley, who then offered a tearful apology. She said the family's forgiveness will give her a chance to forgive herself.
