WESTLAND, Mich. – Surveillance video captured the moment in the middle of the afternoon when a brazen thief stole a tip jar that was chained to the front counter at a Westland restaurant.
Police said the chain holding the tip jar to the front counter at the Bamboo Garden restaurant in Westland didn't stop a woman from taking the jar.
Officials said the tip jar has been stolen twice before, and after the first theft, the owners chained it down. There's usually less than $50 in the jar, but the woman wanted it anyway.
She walked into the restaurant Tuesday afternoon, went in the bathroom and walked out before ordering just four egg rolls. She didn't pay because she said she was waiting for a friend.
When the employee went into the kitchen, the thief made her move. She started to walk away with the jar, and had to stop momentarily to unhook the chain before running out.
There was less than $40 in the tip jar.
