The truck driver drove into the right shoulder around 2:45 p.m. and hit a gray 2006 Western Star with a flatbed trailer. Police said the driver had pulled over because of mechanical issues.

The truck tractor then returned to the road, where it sideswiped a maroon 2013 Nissan Rogue. Police said three people were in the vehicle.

The Rogue and the truck careened into the median, authorities said. The truck then jackknifed and overturned, spilling its contents over the median.

The 60-year-old driver of the truck was airlifted to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. He is listed in critical condition, authorities said.

The other victims were taken to Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Ann Arbor and are listed in stable condition, according to authorities.

According to police, it is unknown why the truck initially left the road. The crash remains under investigation.
