St. Clair Shores foster mom sentenced to year of probation for abusing baby in her care

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. – A foster mom was in court Wednesday for a sentencing hearing for abusing a 1-year-old girl in her care in St. Clair Shores.

Nichole Gomez-Vilchis was found guilty by a jury of second-degree child abuse. She was sentenced to one year of probation.

Family members of the girl, Kallee Diggs, say she and her brother were taken away from their biological mother due to a drug addiction.

Kallee suffered bruises and broken blood vessels at the hands of her foster mother and police were alerted to the problem when she was taken to the hospital with the injuries in June 2014.

The young girl's grandmother, Janice Nikitin, asked the judge for the maximum sentence that the law would allow for Gomez-Vilchis.

"Nicole's actions that day were cruel," Nikitin said. "She not only hurt my granddaughter, but she tried to blame it on my grandson...and for that, I'll never forgive her."

Gomez-Vilchis was previously a teacher at Lincoln Middle School in Warren.
