HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – A 5-year-old boy was critically hurt when he was hit by a driver who took off following the crash.
Amaan Alam is out of surgery, but remains in an intensive-care unit, said Mohammed Alam, the child’s father.
“He's a special kid,” the boy's dad said Sunday.
Amaan has speech delays and experiences some trouble understanding people, so when his grandmother was calling for him about 4:30 p.m. Saturday, the boy ran into the street, Mohammed Alam said.
Amaan, who loves to play outside, was on his bike just before he was hit, Alam said.
“His grandmother was watching him,” Alam said. “He was riding the bike on the sidewalk and his grandmother called him and he thought she was gonna catch him. And he got off the bike and ran on the street.”
Amaan was hit by a Chevrolet Impala. The driver kept on going.
“It's a sign of cowardice because if he stopped, he could have done no mistake,” Alam said. “(I don’t know) why he didn't stop, so there's something wrong with him. I didn't see -- maybe he was speeding.”
Amaan’s family is now asking the driver to come forward -- and requesting prayers, as the boy remains in critical condition at a nearby hospital.
“He's alive,” Alam said. “He's breathing. He's moving his hand and feet, but they said it's gonna take time for his brain to function.”
Police are looking for a silver, early 2000s-model Impala.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Hamtramck Police Department.
