The store manager heard bottles clanking and confronted Sonnenberg, who put the liquor back and agreed to leave the store, according to police.

As Sonnenberg was leaving, the manager heard more clanking, and Sonnenberg gave back two more bottles of liquor, police said. He then left the store before police arrived.

Fingerprints on the bottles identified Sonnenberg as the suspect. A warrant was authorized May 18 for second-degree retail fraud.

Sonnenberg had previously been charged in retail frauds and has an extensive criminal history.

Sonnenberg was brought to the Bloomfield Township Police Department Sept. 19 after another agency arrested him on the warrant. He admitted to being at the store, but denied taking liquor.

He admitted to another retail fraud on Aug. 26 at the Kroger in the 3600 block of West Maple Road in Bloomfield Township. On that day, he took two bottles of liquor valued at $106.

An additional count of retail fraud was added for the incident.

Sonnenberg was arraigned Tuesday and is being held on $50,000 bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 3.
