According to WXIA, the occupants were rushed to the hospital in serious condition.

Police say the victims became trapped in the burning vehicle after it crashed into a concrete post under a bridge.

The officers said that by time they were able to smash the windows open, the heat in the car was tremendous. An extinguisher was used to put out the flames that had begun to engulf the occupants. Officers said the victims were screaming for help, but were pinned inside.

Fire department personnel soon arrived and freed the trapped passengers. The department said that without the officers' quick actions, the victims would have died.

Officers Derek Daniel, Elijah McCall, Michal Skillman, Andre Valentine, and Bill Brooks are being praised for their heroic efforts.

The cause of the crash is unknown as police continue to investigate the incident.
