District Superintendent Tim Wilson sent out a letter to parents Wednesday night which reads:

"Dear Parents and Guardians,

We recently had an incident in which a teacher in our middle school made a racially insensitive remark to her students. We first learned of this on Thursday of last week when a parent called to report that the teacher was disturbed that a group of students were talking in the back of the classroom. The students were African American. The teacher stated something to the effect of, 'I know it is customary within the black culture to be loud, but we cannot have that happen anymore.'

We investigated the incident, found the report credible, and undertook appropriate action to ensure that such an incident will not be repeated.

At Clawson Public Schools, we foster an inclusive environment. We do not discriminate, and we do not tolerate discriminatory behavior. I want to thank those parents and students who came forward to report this behavior. The behavior is not in keeping with our expectations of our staff or our board policies."
