University of Michigan to build $300M ‘innovation center’ at failed Wayne County jail site in Detroit

DETROIT – The University of Michigan is building a new innovation center at the site of the failed Wayne County jail project in Downtown Detroit. Bedrock, the University of Michigan and local leaders announced the project this week that will sit on Gratiot Avenue, near Eastern Market, spanning 14-acres, named the Detroit Center for Innovation (DCI).

Detroit-born actor John Witherspoon dies

Topping our headlines today is the passing of John Witherspoon, a Detroit native. He taught Ice Cube how to be a man in the 90s hit film “Friday.” Celebrities are tweeting their mournful tributes.

Family finds black widow spider in bag of grapes

Andy Russo documented, on video, what his wife Karen brought home from the grocery store Monday. A spider had somehow made its way into a bag of grapes and traveled from the store into their Milford home. Check it out here.

Boy fatally mauled by dog

Police said a 4-year-old boy was mauled to death by a dog at a home in Hazel Park. A 14-year-old girl contacted 911 Tuesday at 6:44 p.m. to report that her mother was trying to stop a dog in the home from attacking her brother, police said.
