Christmas presents stolen by package thieves at multiple homes in Royal Oak

Package thieves strike in area of 11 Mile Road and Stephens Highway

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Several homes are decked out with Christmas decorations in the area of 11 Mile Road and Stephens Highway in Royal Oak, but with the holiday season comes an opportunity for thieves.

Along with the decorations, there are also plenty of packages sitting on porches, and thieves have an eye on them.

Video captured a man quickly walking up to a house in broad daylight, grabbing a box and leaving with it.

Rachel Haynes spent her evening calling around and trying to get her son's stolen Christmas gifts replaced.

"I don't even know if they're going to believe me when I call them, but I do have the police report," Haynes said.

The video clearly shows a man walking onto her property after a UPS delivery man dropped packages off. Within minutes of the drop-off, a thief in a blue sweatshirt and baseball cap swooped in.

Royal Oak police said they're looking into whether the man is behind multiple thefts in recent days. When Haynes talked to neighbors, she learned she wasn't the only victim.

"(A neighbor) said it happened two to three times this past week, but it's been Amazon stuff," Haynes said.

She and others in the area came home Tuesday to find packages stolen from their property. Her gifts will be remailed, but she and police hope to catch the man before he strikes again.

"I'm hoping he gets caught," Haynes said. "You just can't steal people's items."
