Detroit police sources: 2 officers shot were not investigating Sgt. Collin Rose murder

DETROIT – Two Detroit police officers who were shot Wednesday night were investigating reports of narcotics activity and other violent crimes in the area of Ash and Tillman.  

Detroit police sources said the officers were not investigating the murder of Wayne State University police Sgt. Collin Rose, as previous stated by police. The shooting scene Wednesday night is more than a mile from where Rose was shot Nov. 22.

What happened: 

Police said the officers approached a 60-year-old man Wednesday night who appeared suspicious. They asked him about the recent reports of crimes. Officers said the man started to "get weird" and went into his pockets. He started wrestling with the officers and was able to pull out his own gun and shoot one officer in the jaw and neck. The other officer was shot in the ankle and torso. 

Both officers are recovering at Detroit Receiving Hospital. One of the officers is a 20-year veteran and the other has been on the force less than 5 years. 

The accused shooter also is in the hospital recovering from a gunshot wound he suffered when officers returned fire, police said.
