Fake grenade found at Detroit gas station

Police found the device sitting on a gas pump

DETROIT, MI – A Detroit police officer discovered what investigators believe to be a fake hand grenade at a gas station on Detroit's west side early Sunday morning.

The officer found the device at the BP gas station at the corner of East Jefferson Avenue and Montclair. It was placed on top of a gas pump, police said.

The Detroit Police Department, Detroit Fire Department and bomb squad units quickly arrived on scene and blocked off roadways for two blocks in every direction while they removed the device.

The bomb squad was able to safely retrieve the device by around 5 a.m., and the gas station and roadways were reopened.

Preliminary investigations revealed the device was fake.

Investigators are now trying to identify who planted the fake explosive.
