Woman killed, 2 men hurt when gunman opens fire on Detroit's east side, police say

Gunfire erupts while victims sit inside car in driveway, officials say

DETROIT – Police said three people were sitting inside a car in a driveway on Detroit's east side when someone pulled up and started firing shots.

The shooting left a 24-year-old woman dead and two men injured outside a home on Guilford Street, police said. It happened around 11:30 p.m. Monday.

"I got goosebumps because I know a lot of people around here," said Peggy Bates, who lives in the neighborhood and heard gunshots. "I have a hard time hearing, but I sure heard those, and they echoed in between the houses."

Police said the shooter pulled up in a black car.

"It scares me," Bates said. "I can't even go out to my car at night out of fear of who's going to see me and who's going to shoot me."

Bates and other neighbors said they're tired of the violence.

"It's, like, what are we going to do about it?" Bates asked. "I don't want to live my life like that, but I love my city."
