Hepatitis A infection identified in Southgate restaurant

Officials urge people to get vaccinated, wash hands

SOUTHGATE, Mich. – The Wayne County Department of Health, Veterans and Community Wellness has confirmed a case of hepatitis A in a food service worker of Andy’s Pizza & Subs, located at 13280 Northline Rd.

The Southgate restaurant remains open as it cooperates with the department's investigation. All staff members have been vaccinated, authorities said.

Wayne County Health officials are advising anyone who consumed food from the Southgate Andy’s Pizza & Sub location between Nov. 3 and Nov.17 to watch for symptoms of hepatitis A, which can include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dark urine, clay-colored stool, fever, chills, yellow skin and eyes. Hepatitis A symptoms typically occur between 15 and 50 days after exposure and can last for several weeks to months. In some cases, hepatitis A can be fatal.

Wayne County Health officials urge all residents get vaccinated for hepatitis A. Individuals should consult with their physician to determine if they can receive the vaccine through their provider.
For those without insurance coverage, the vaccine is available at the Wayne County Health Department Clinic, located at 33030 Van Born Rd. in Wayne, Michigan.
