According to NBC News, the Boeing 777 carrying 233 passengers and 15 crewmembers returned to Tokyo's Haneda International Airport about an hour after takeoff. No injuries were reported.

The plane returned around noon local time after dumping excess jet fuel over the sea.

Japan Airlines said the pilot reported the possibility of a bird striking the left engine. No bird was found in the engine and authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire.

One passenger reported hearing a sound upon takeoff. He said he thought nothing of it until an emergency announcement was made.
