LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State Police released the final traffic crash data for 2025, revealing that traffic fatalities declined slightly even though the total number of crashes increased.
According to the data, 1,065 people were killed in crashes on Michigan’s public roads in 2025. The number of fatalities in Michigan crashes has been relatively unchanged since 2004.
Recent crash data shows us that the total number of crashes have been pretty steady since 2023.
We spoke to Michigan State Police Lieutenant Ty Howard, who shared the department’s top concern with us.
“What we’re concerned about is the 18% increase in pedestrian fatalities along with bicycle deaths as well too. There’s been numerous individuals within our state struck on e-bikes and also pedestrians being struck,” Howard said.
Michigan State Police call bicyclists and pedestrians “vulnerable roadway users.” Here’s the 2025 data on them:
- There were 35 bicyclists killed in 2025. That’s up 21% from the year before.
- There were 184 pedestrians killed in 2025. That’s up 18% from the year before.
It’s worth noting that deadly crashes involving commercial vehicles were also up in 2025. There were 128 people killed. That’s up 16% from the year before.
Here’s a look at some more crash data released by MSP:
- Distracted-driving crash fatalities dropped to 44 people killed. That’s down 32%.
- Drug-involved crash deaths dropped to 210. That’s down 23%.
- Teens killed in crashes fell to 61. That’s down 21%.
“If you’re driving the vehicle, put the phone down. You need to focus on what’s in front of you, and that’s the roadway,” Howard said.
The data also revealed which holiday is the deadliest for motorists. In 2025, that ended up being Labor Day. There were 15 deadly crashes and 17 people were killed.
The second-deadliest holiday for motorists was Memorial Day. Thirteen people were killed. You can find a more in-depth look at holiday crash statistics here.
Michigan’s Traffic Safety Advisory Commission is working to make roads safer. They launched the Safer by 2030 initiative in December 2025 with the goal of reducing crash fatalities by 30% using “awareness, engagement, and enforcement.”
