John Dingell to be laid to rest: Here are this week's funeral, burial plans

Funeral is Tuesday in Dearborn, another funeral in D.C.

DEARBORN, Mich. – Former Michigan Rep. John Dingell will be laid to rest this week.

A funeral will be held Tuesday morning in Dearborn. 

  • VISITATION: A visitation was open to the public Monday at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn.
  • FUNERAL: A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Church of the Divine Child -- 1055 North Silvery Lane, Dearborn, Michigan 48128. It will also be open to the public. A second funeral service will be held Thursday morning in Washington, D.C.
  • BURIAL: Dingell, who served in the Army during World War II, will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia after the second funeral in Washington.

It was revealed last week that Dingell was in hospice care, and his wife tweeted that she missed the State of the Union to be with him.

"The Lovely Deborah is insisting I rest and stay off here, but after long negotiations we've worked out a deal where she'll keep up with Twitter for me as I dictate the messages," Dingell tweeted at 5:41 p.m. Wednesday. "I want to thank you all for your incredibly kind words and prayers. You're not done with me just yet."

His family confirmed Thursday that he died. 

His funeral service in Dearborn will include former Vice President Joe Biden, Rep. John Lewis and Rep. Fred Upton as speakers. The pallbearers will include Dingell's former staff.

Former President Bill Clinton, Rep. Steny Hoyer and former Speaker of the House John Boehner will speak at his service in Washington.

The pallbearers will include former members of Congress and colleagues of Dingell.
