Troy police were called Wednesday (Feb. 8) to a home in the 3000 block of Newgate Drive, which is near the intersection of North Adams and West Big Beaver roads.

A resident told officials that “suspicious” people were walking in a neighbor’s backyard. Those people knocked on the neighbor’s door and peeked through windows before walking around to the back, according to the caller.

The people in question fled in a black Kia Sorento before officers could arrive, but police said the caller gave them a detailed description of the SUV.

During their investigation of the home on Newgate Drive, officers said they found pry marks along the back sliding door and door frame. The door frame was “damaged and bent,” Troy police report.

The neighbor told authorities that one of the men had been wearing a yellow safety vest, and another had been carrying a ladder.

Traffic stop leads to charges

Officers pulled the Sorento over on I-75, south of the Big Beaver Road entrance ramp, they said. The SUV had a California license plate.

Police said four people were inside the Sorento: Yohona Ortiz, Geiler Orobio-Cabezas, Cesar Aldana-Velasquez, and Madeleyne Leon-Gutierrez.

Officers said they found a yellow safety vest and a ladder on the back floorboard of the Sorento.

All four people were taken into custody and charged with second-degree home invasion, second-degree attempted home invasion, and receiving and concealing stolen property greater than $20,000.

They were arraigned Friday at 52-4 District Court. Ortiz and Leon-Gutierrez are being held on $500,000 bond, Orobio-Cabezas is being held on $800,000 bond, and Aldana-Velasquez is being held on $900,000 bond.

Stolen items recovered

Police received a warrant to search the SUV and found several jewelry items that had been packaged and hidden under the center console and engine compartments, according to authorities.

They also recovered items that had been stolen during a home invasion earlier this month in Missouri, police said.

“The Troy Police Department would like to recognize our officers for their quick response in this case in locating the fleeing vehicle,” the release says. “Investigators were able to connect these arrests to a multi-state crime spree. We also would like to praise the instinctive neighbor for recognizing a crime was occurring, notifying Troy police immediately, and providing detailed information.”
