BLOOMFIELD HILLS -- Troy senior guard Zach Penoza was not looking to be the star of the game on Thursday night. Playing in a key OAA White road matchup against Bloomfield Hills, Penoza simply wanted to play his role as best he could to help the team win. In the end, Penoza ended up playing the role of hero as he made all three of his field goals in the final 3:20 of the game to help lift Troy to a 58-52 win over Bloomfield Hills. He also did that while also playing spirited defense against Bloomfield Hills’ top player, Noah Adamczyk.

Detroit woman accused of repeatedly stealing mail, credit cards in Troy

TROY, MI – A Detroit woman was arrested after police officers caught her stealing mail in Troy. According to the Troy Police Department, officers were conducting extra patrols in a neighborhood near Crooks Road and Big Beaver Road on Jan. 16 after receiving numerous complaints of mail theft from residents. An Investigation into Howard and her vehicle revealed numerous pieces of Troy residents’ mail, along with personal checks and credit cards in the name of other people. “We continue to ask our residents to be vigilant amid a rise in mail theft reports. Stolen mail can lead to identity theft, stolen checks and negatively affect your credit rating.”

85-year-old woman killed in traffic crash at Rochester Hills intersection

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI -- An 85-year-old Troy woman was killed Tuesday night due to injuries she suffered in a three-car crash at the intersection of Adams and Auburn roads. According to WDIV-Detroit, Mary Howe was traveling northbound on Adams Road in a 2020 Chevrolet Impala and was attempting to turn left onto Auburn Road. The Jeep then smashed into a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze that was on Auburn Road waiting to turn. Rochester Hills firefighters were able to transport Howe to a nearby hospital, but she later died as a result of her injuries. The driver of the Jeep was treated for minor injuries and the other driver refused treatment.

The fire reportedly started at the Capital Grille, located on the north side of the mall property. TROY, MI – Multiple people were arrested after a man broke into a Michigan restaurant through its roof, stole up to $30,000 of alcohol and drove off with an infant in the vehicle. The 24-year-old is accused of climbing the restaurant’s ventilation system to reach the roof, forcing multiple doors open and stealing several boxes of alcohol, police said. The driver of the vehicle, the 24-year-old, was found to not have a driver’s license and was placed under arrest, according to police. Officers located a crowbar and approximately eight new packaged liquor bottles in the backseat of the vehicle, police said. The vehicle was also occupied by the front-seat passenger’s infant child, who was released to a family member, police said.

Mom calls cops on son, 14, after finding cash from alleged liquor store robbery

TROY, MI -- A 14-year-old Troy teen was arrested last month and is accused of robbing a liquor store after his mother called police on him. According to the Troy Police Department, officers were called to Capitol Wine and Liquor in the 6000 block of Rochester Road around 5:38 p.m. on March 29 for a reported robbery. Police interviewed an employee at the store who said a young man approached the counter and demanded she “empty the register.” The young man did not produce a weapon, but kept his hand in the pocket of his hooded sweatshirt. The employee complied and handed the money over to the suspect who then fled on foot. The teen eventually admitted to police that he’d robbed the store earlier in the day.

Man accused of chasing people with hatchet says it was mistaken identity

TROY, MI - A man accusing of chasing people with a hatchet says he went going after the wrong people. The alleged incident happened last week in the parking lot of the Lifetime Fitness at Long Lake and Crooks in Troy in Metro Detroit. Police say the alleged victims parked next to the man because they knew him from school. They tell police he blocked them in and ran around their car with the hatchet and even hit the passenger side window causing damage. Police tracked down the suspect nearby and arrested him during a traffic stop, finding the hatchet in his vehicle.

Michigan city discriminated against religious group, judge says

DETROIT – A Michigan city discriminated against a religious group by preventing it from creating a place of worship, a federal judge ruled. On June 19, 2018, Troy’s zoning board denied Adam’s application. A federal judge, ruling in favor of the Justice Department, found that Troy violated the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000 (RLUIPA). Troy’s zoning practices treat places of worship worse than equivalent nonreligious assemblies, the judge said. The judge also found that Troy’s zoning denial substantially burdened the religious exercise of a Muslim group seeking to establish the only permanent place of Islamic worship in Troy.

Ann Arbor School Board voting on another $1.3M in upgrades for Pioneer High School theaters

ANN ARBOR, MI - Upgrades continue to be made to an Ann Arbor Public Schools high school theater and auditorium where mold was discovered last summer, with another $1.36 million in improvements up for approval. The AAPS School Board will vote on upgrades to Pioneer High School’s Schreiber Auditorium and Little Theater on Wednesday, March 23, with new audio, video and stage lighting systems among the recommended improvements. As part of the restoration of the two spaces, an assessment was conducted of the audio-visual and stage lighting systems. Other upgrades include new wireless microphones, new projectors, a streaming interface box, and a complete replacement of the theatrical lighting system, AAPS Executive Director for Capital Projects Emile Lauzzana said. The district completed the mitigation of mold found in both theaters after testing the area to make sure operations at the high school could continue in December 2021.

Michigan man fatally shoots daughter, injures wife, then kills himself

TROY, MI – A man and his daughter are dead, and his wife is injured after an apparent domestic violence shooting on Tuesday morning in Troy, FOX 2 Detroit reports. When police arrived, they found the child was deceased and the man had fled, the report said. The injured woman, who is expected to survive, gave police her husband’s cell phone number. Officers spoke to the man and convinced him to return to the scene. However, the man stepped out his vehicle and shot himself; he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

TROY, MI — A suspected murder-suicide here ended with the deaths of 23-year-old twin brothers and a family dog, Troy Police Department officials reported. Investigators discovered the suspected killer in the backseat of the vehicle, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the police report stated. A family dog was found with him, dead from a gunshot from a handgun discovered at the crash scene on Parrot Drive near Edgemont Drive. The father of the suspect — who called 9-1-1 moments after the shooting at the Lark Drive house — remains in critical but stable condition at a nearby hospital, the Troy police report stated. Michigan man accused of fatally shooting his mother in head on Thanksgiving

ROYAL OAK, MI -- A 22-year-old Troy man is in custody after he allegedly shot and killed his mother on Thanksgiving Day. According to the Associated Press, the suspect -- who has not been identified -- was traveling as a passenger in a car with his 52-year-old mother late Thursday evening. The pair eventually stopped while heading northbound on Woodward Avenue and were beneath the Interstate 696 overpass when police say the suspect shot his mother in the head, killing her. The suspect then fled from the vehicle, which was stopped near the Pleasant Ridge and Royal Oak city limits, according to police.
