44-year-old man sentenced after his 5-year-old nephew finds gun, shoots himself in Eastpointe

EASTPOINTE, Mich. – A 44-year-old man has been sentenced after his 5-year-old nephew shot himself in the foot in Eastpointe.

On Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2022, Laron Alston was caring for his autistic nephew when he placed his registered .40-caliber Sig Sauer handgun on his recliner and covered it with blankets. His nephew then got the gun and shot himself in the foot.

Alston was charged with child abuse in the second degree. He pleaded guilty to attempted child abuse in the second degree on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023.

“Gun owners must store their firearms in a safe and secure manner to avoid children accessing them. This situation could have been much worse,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.

He was sentenced to 12 months probation, restitution, no contact with his nephew, Class A training, and must forfeit his guns.

The victim’s mother was present during sentencing and agreed with the plea and sentence.
