Michigan State Police use canoe to arrest suspect who fled into river

Suspect to have mental evaluation

EATON COUNTY, Mich. – A 32-year-old man from Holt has been hospitalized for hypothermia after Michigan State Police troopers reportedly pulled him from a river Friday, Jan. 26.

According to authorities, police received a 911 call regarding a man who was threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend and boyfriend. He was believed to be drunk and suicidal. When police found the man near the intersection of Vermontville Highway and Bradley Road in Charlotte, he reportedly fled on foot into the Thornapple River.

A Michigan State Police K-9 tracked the man through the swamp and river and a drone was able to locate him in the water. Troopers used a canoe to reach the man and take him into custody.

He was taken to Sparrow Hospital to be treated for hypothermia and intoxication and to have a mental evaluation. When released, he will be lodged at the Eaton County Jail.
