---> Why the Gordie Howe Bridge was built
The Gordie Howe Bridge is owned by Michigan and Canada, but was paid for almost entirely by Canada.
The new bridge connecting I-75 in Detroit to Highway 401 in Ontario officially opened to traffic on Monday, July 27. The toll-free multi-use path will open to walkers and cyclists on Wednesday, Aug. 5.

The bridge is designed with six bridge lanes, 16 toll lanes, and 60 Canada and U.S. inspection lanes. Its 720-ft towers are among the tallest structures in the region, and it’s the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America.

Comparing toll prices with Ambassador Bridge, Detroit-Windsor Tunnel
Here’s a look at how much the toll is to cross the bridge:
| Vehicle Category | CAD Rate | US Rate | Breakaway Rate (CAD) | Breakaway Rate (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Personal vehicle | $8.00 | $5.75 | $6.00 | $4.35 |
| Personal vehicle with trailer | $8.00 + $8.00 per trailer | $5.75 + $5.75 per trailer | $6.00 + $6.00 per trailer | $4.35 + $4.35 per trailer |
| Large commercial and passenger vehicles | $12 per axle | $8.75 per axle | $9.60 per axle | $6.90 per axle |
| Hazardous and oversized vehicles | $12 per axle | $8.75 per axle | $9.60 per axle | $6.90 per axle |
With Breakaway -- a toll discount program that allows vehicles to pass through toll lanes without having to stop and pay -- the toll for passenger vehicles is less than half the current price to cross the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, both of which raised their tolls this year.
Registration is available on the official Gordie Howe International Bridge website.
