HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. – A Highland Park man found out he’d won $250,000 through the Michigan Lottery in a very strange (and slightly alarming) way.

Kelvin Wilson, 62, of Highland Park, bought a Powerball ticket at HP Liquor on Woodward Avenue in Highland Park and matched the four white balls and the Powerball -- 01-03-07-16-66, PB: 05 -- from the March 11 drawing.

“I play Powerball with my family for each drawing,” Wilson said. “We each pick a number, and this is a set of numbers we’ve played for awhile.”

He won a $50,000 prize, but thanks to the Power Play, it was multiplied to $250,000.

Wilson said he found out about his victory when he started to get strange alerts on his phone about purchases on his debit card.

“The day after the drawing, I was out of the house, and I started getting alerts on my phone that someone was making purchases using my business account,” Wilson said. “I called home and asked my wife and daughter if it was them, and they told me not to worry about it because ‘I had the money.’ That’s when they told me what we had won. I couldn’t believe my ears.”

Wilson visited Michigan Lottery headquarters to claim his prize. He plans to invest the winnings into his business.
