Mother accused of pepper spraying students at Detroit middle school

Use of pepper spray could have been self defense

DETROIT – Police in Detroit are investigating after a mother allegedly used pepper spray on a group of students on Friday, April 19.

It happened at University Prep Middle School on St Antoine, not too far from the I-94 and I-75 interchange.

Apparently, the mother was there to defend her daughter because she thought the class was bullying her. Video from the scene captures a teacher telling the parent she cannot be there and the parent walks off, turns around and a group of kids following her starts to run.

The mother reportedly hit 13 kids with pepper spray.

Normally, parents don’t have access to children during the school day because they’re behind closed doors, but the class was playing outside and she reportedly walked right up to them. She reportedly began confronting the children and told the teachers she was not going to leave.

Shanae Sack’s 11-year-old son got hit by the pepper spray.

“These are children,” Sacks said. “Sixth graders.”

Detroit police and fire crews responded to tend to the injured children. Sack said her child and others are traumatized.

“It wasn’t an actual school shooting shooting, but my emotions can’t tell the difference,” Sack said. “These are nine, 10, 11-year-olds and they’re traumatized from this event.”

Before confronting the students outside, the woman reportedly went inside the school to speak with school officials first and did not get the answer she was looking for.
