Detroit judge denies bail to man linked to kidnapping, sexually assaulting women

‘I wish I could put the defendant under the jail,’ judge says

DETROIT – A judge has denied bail to a man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting two women more than a decade ago.

Prosecutors claim DNA from Demetrius Givens matches DNA in two brutal attacks, one 10 years ago and the other 12.

Givens was arrested recently for carrying a concealed weapon -- a knife -- and his DNA was put into a national database that linked him to the assaults.

The two women spoke in court on Wednesday, May 22. The first said she was forced into a vacant home and sexually assaulted by Givens in 2012.

The other woman said she was attacked the same way in 2014. She was so upset that the prosecutor read from her statement.

DNA was collected after the assaults, but a suspect was never found until Givens’ DNA was run through the database. Prosecutors said samples from both attacks match Givens.

His defense attorney said Givens is a different person than he was a decade ago and asked for him to be let out on bond.

“The evidence presented to this court today was so overwhelming that I wish I could put the defendant under the jail,” said Judge Kenneth King.

Authorities believe he may be connected to other unsolved assaults.
