Back-to-back shootings leave teen, 3 men injured on Detroit’s west side

Shootings were 10 minutes apart

DETROIT – Two separate shootings minutes apart have left a teen and three adults injured on Detroit’s west side.

The first shooting occurred at 11 a.m. on West 7 Mile and Gilchrest Street, where two men in their 20s were injured.

Then, 10 minutes later, more shots were fired blocks away where a teen and another man in his 20s were injured with non-life threatening injuries on Fielding Street and Cambridge Avenue.

Four people were shot overall, with one of the men being listed in critical condition.

Many residents told Local 4 that they were taking cover during the incidents.

“I heard about 10 gunshots, and then I saw three or four people running,” said Dale Coleman.

The sound of gunfire shattered a quiet morning on Detroit’s west side. The shots were so loud that Kamika Greer said she was able to hear them while sitting in car at a gas station.

“I heard a whole bunch of gunshots pass by,” said Greer. “I seen a whole bunch of people running across 7 Mile and I hurried up and got out of the car and ran into the gas station.”

Officials say one of the victims was a 14-year-old, but officials say both shootings were not connected.

Police are investigating reports of groups of people fighting - and firing shots at one another.

“From what I could tell, they are not connected,” said Detroit police Deputy Chief Jacqueline Pritchett. “This investigation is fluid. It is wide open, and we’re still gathering information, but currently, right now, we can’t say that they are connected.”

Gary Greer said he heard the shots, and then he saw people who were hit by those shots run past his house.

“Me and the gas station guy watched it, but it look like they were running from down the street and started falling past my house,” said Gary.

Investigators are going over the areas where the shootings took place in search of evidence.

But it looked like it was a running gun battle even down the street away from the police tape where shell castings lay on the sidewalk.
