Person of interest in custody

DETROIT – A shooting on Detroit’s west side has left two people killed, another two injured, and an 11-year-old with a graze wound.

The incident occurred on Friday (May 9) in the 157200 block of Patton Street, just before 6 p.m., when Detroit police Major Crimes Commander Rebecca McKay said one of the victims was in critical condition.

McKay said the 11-year-old who was grazed by a bullet was listed in stable condition.

Mackay said, “At this point in time, we don’t have any information related to what initiated this horrible incident. Homicide is investigating this, and as the days go by, we should have more information.”

In total, four individuals were shot during the incident. Mackay confirmed, “Two are deceased.” However, she noted that there is currently no information regarding the relationship between the individuals involved.

“We do know that it was two groups of people, whether they’re related, whether they’re not. We don’t know that at this time,” McKay said.

Police said they have a person of interest in custody, but the investigation is ongoing.

“We have to determine exactly what this individual had to do with the incident,” Mackay said.

She also mentioned that two different caliber casings were found at the scene, indicating the use of both a handgun and a rifle.

Regarding the child involved, Mackay said, “We have one child who was grazed in stable condition, expected to be just fine.”

Mackay emphasized that the incident appears to be isolated between the two groups.

“We believe at this point in time, it’s an isolated incident between two individual groups. I don’t believe that the public has anything to fear at this point in time,” McKay said.

The commander expressed confidence in the department’s strategies to combat violence, especially with summer approaching.

“Under the leadership of Chief Todd Betten, we are very confident that we have strategies in place to combat violence,” McKay said. “We will continue our strategies as the summer goes on.”

As for the individuals who were shot, Mackay could not confirm whether they were innocent bystanders or part of the groups involved in the shooting.

“I don’t have that information at this point in time, but we will update the media as we learn more about this incident,” McKay said.
