EASTPOINTE, Mich. – A brother and sister are facing charges in connection with a shooting in the parking lot of a Footlocker in Eastpointe that killed two people and injured others, officials said.
Lakylia Sheila Taylor, 19, of Detroit, was charged with second-degree homicide, assault with intent to murder, tampering with evidence, carrying a concealed weapon and two counts of felony firearm, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.
This comes after her attorney contacted Eastpointe police and arranged for Lakylia to turn herself in on Monday, May 5.
Her brother, Dejuan Taylor, has also been charged in connection with the shooting. He was arraigned on the charges of tampering with evidence, firearm larceny, carrying a concealed weapon and larceny less than $200. He faces up to 10 years in prison for tampering with evidence.

Siblings, others arrive at Footlocker
The 19-year-old allegedly pulled her car into the parking lot of the Footlocker on 8 Mile Road at about 2:50 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2025. She was with her brother and others, officials said.
They got out of her vehicle and walked toward a Jeep Compass that was also parked in the lot.
When Dejuan was walking up to the Jeep, Tyjaune Pierre Morris-Turner got out of the vehicle with a gun, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Argument escalates
Dejuan and Morris-Turner got into an argument, which escalated into a physical fight.
Lakylia told police that when this happened, she ran back to her car to get her gun, which was unregistered, according to the prosecutor’s office.
While Lakylia went to her car, Steven Edward Gardin Jr. and Juvan Maurice Newman allegedly got out of the Jeep to join in on the fight.
Dejuan was “overpowered and on the ground while the group continued to pummel him,” according to the prosecutor’s office.
Sister fires shots, 2 killed, prosecutor says
When Lakylia got back to the altercation, she told police that she shot and killed Newman, who had been on top of her brother.
Gardin Jr. and Morris-Turner allegedly began to disengage once this happened, but Lakylia fired shots at them. Gardin Jr. died, and Morris-Turner was severely injured. Dejuan was also injured.
Siblings leave scene
Dejuan took Morris-Turner’s gun, some magazines that were on the ground, and then left the Footlocker with his sister and the others in her car.
“This was a senseless act of violence,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido. “Young lives are lost and ruined forever from this conduct. Self-defense of yourself and/or others is allowed, but street justice is never permissible. The Prosecutor’s Office hopes this horrible event serves as a powerful reminder that such acts of violence will not be tolerated, and that lawful justice will be pursued to the fullest extent of the law.”
Next court dates
Lakylia was arraigned and given a $2,500,000 cash surety bond with no 10%. If she posts bond and is released from jail, she must wear a steel GPS tether.
Dejuan was given a $250,000 cash/surety bond. He also must wear a GPS tether if released.
They have probable cause conferences scheduled for May 20 and preliminary examinations set for May 27.
