Ohio man arrested after crash kills pregnant woman, sheriff says

Speeding, alcohol believed to be factors in deadly crash

WHITEFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – An Ohio man was arrested after running from a suspected drunk driving crash that killed a pregnant woman.

The crash was reported at 10:01 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025, and happened on northbound US-23 north of Consear Road in Whiteford Township.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Kaitlyn A. Ellison, 32, of Petersburg, Michigan was driving a Ford Escape on US-23 when the truck was side-swiped by a Chrysler 300 driven by a 24-year-old man from Oregon, Ohio.

Witnesses told investigators that the Ohio man was speeding on the right shoulder before he merged into the right lane and attempted to pass the Ford on the left. The Chrysler struck the Ford, causing it to run off the roadway.

The Ford rolled several times over an embankment before stopping on its right side. Ellison was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by the Whiteford Township Fire Department

Ellison was transported to Toledo Hospital where she was pronounced dead. She was seven months pregnant.

Police said the Ohio man ran from the scene of the crash. He was located at a Pilot gas station on Us-223. He was arrested and is being held at the Monroe County Jail.

He is expected to face two counts of second-degree homicide and two counts of OWI causing death.

His name is not being released until he has been formally arraigned in Monroe County 1st District Court.
